The History of Chicken Starship

Out of the dust of the Free Range Chickens rises Chicken Starship. A new century, a new millennium, a new name. But as with everything else these days it's really just the same old crap re-packaged.

The Chickens began in New Brunswick, NJ, where Joe and Jack were attending Rutgers University's Theater graduate school. Jack and Joe formed Stupid Jerks With Feelings for a debut/farewell show at Doll's Place, a local dive. Jack dropped out, Joe remained, and Jack came home to the great Northwest. After graduating, Joe followed his heart (which had been drop-kicked west) to Seattle, and with the help of Jack's high-school pal Sean, and the urging of big fan Nellis formed Eyeballs Out Re-entry with a guitar, a harmonica, some wooden spoons, some car keys and a dream. After two shows, they adopted the name Free Range Chickens , donned the hoods and capes, and became a band.

After shows at New City Theatre late night, a second Beer Theatre (featuring some ugliness with hard boiled eggs), and Annex Theatre (mostly Sean and Jack screaming a lot), the Chickens got serious and added Randy (formerly of the Pathetic Wannabes, now formerly of Free Range Chickens ) on bass and Scott on drums. Two shows later, Steve joined on rhythm guitar.

FRC Circa 1997After a year of occasional shows, Randy decided to "explore other interests", and was replaced by Branden, who was soon thereafter replaced by bassist extraordinaire Mark - The Angry Chicken. Mark could only stand these jokers for so long, and finally flew the coop.

Thus we entered the dark ages, wherein the Chickens went on hiatus and returned to their respective coops.

Fast forward a few years and Jack Chicken is rapidly approaching the milestone birthday of 35. Where other wives would buy their husbands flashy sports cars to keep their mid-life crises in check, Jill Chicken sent out the call: We're getting the band back together, and we're not telling Jack. Joe, Steve and Scott called their good friend BNaz Chicken (formerly of Travis Shredd and the Good Old Homeboys ) and he agreed to sit in for the gig.

Jack was floored. Literally. After the shock wore off and we got a few beers in him he said "Damn, that was fun. We should do this again." BNaz had better things to do with his time, so we lured Ben Chicken into the coop and beat him senseless. By the time he came to we'd stuffed him in the chicken suit and taken several pictures, so he was stuck. Fortunately for us he kicks Bass and has a great sense of humor...

With all the lineup changes, and the loss of Sean Chicken to the Bellingham Fire Department, a new name was in order. And, naturally, we settled on Chicken Starship .

How to describe the Chickens music? We like to think of it as Blurfry: Blues, Surf, Country. But there's some punk, some straight ahead Rock, and a very heavy cartoon influence. So you figure it out, and if you come up with a better name for the style let us know at info@chickenstarship.com .
